This blog is dedicated to showcasing body shaming, abuse of women online and the effects it has on the targets.
We’ve decided not to hide the individuals behind the abuse to break a norm where abusers act freely knowing the world focuses only on their targets.
Uganda Model Judith Heard shared a picture of herself and commenced to receive a barrage of insults about what her fans considered unacceptable weight loss. Judith has been brave enough to launch a campaign against body shaming, and with her permission, we share these screenshots of the insults she received. We invite women from all over the world to share screenshots of other forms of abuse, and to share how it impacts their lives.
Why are we not hiding the names of the abusers? Because it’s time for a change. Victims of abuse have to live with that digital shadow of them on the Internet forever, and abusers are allowed to remain shadows.
Today, we shine a light on the shadows. Should you find your name here, or find someone you know here, kindly ask them to send an apology to Judith and we shall pull down their screenshot. Short of that, the time has come to walk in a victim’s shoes. The hashtag for this campaign is #thisshitendsnow.
The same applies to any woman who shares a screenshot. When you receive an apology, send us a message on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/HerEmpireUganda) and we shall pull down that person’s screenshot.
Here’s to seeing the true ugliness of online abuse that women are facing all over the world and we hope you see the hate and the psychological impact it most definitely has on its victims.
Okay, so let’s do this.
